Probationer

After a period of around six months, new boys can be admitted as probationers (shortened to ‘prob’) to the concert choir.  As part of the concert choir they are exposed to the day to day life of a chorister, but are not expected to be able to sing all the pieces yet. Individual capabilities are monitored and taken into account.

During this period each boy is assigned a personal coach – an experienced boy from the choir. The probationer is placed next to said coach at rehearsals and where necessary they visit at home for transference of knowledge and practice of skills.

When the time is ripe, these probs can audition in front of the conductor and the whole group of boys, to gain admission to the choir.  If they pass this test, they become full members of the Roden Boys’ Choir which is made visible by them being allowed to wear their white surplice during concerts.  As a junior chorister they can continue to count on the support of their coach.
